Skye Dental was founded with the vision of providing high end dentistry to all patients, in a unique setting, with end-to-end services in all aspects. Dr Andrew Doig and Dr May Ling Eide have many years of experience between them, each focusing on different parts of dentistry. Dr Andrew is a General Dental Practitioner and provides most treatment modalities involving restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Dr May has additional postgraduate training in the specialty of orthodontics, and provides all orthodontic treatment for patients of Skye Dental. They have a team approach with patients who require extensive or multidisciplinary treatment and they employ the most modern techniques in order to achieve the results.

Drs Andrew and May also wanted to make the dental experience as pleasant as possible, as though you were entering a home that you enjoyed visiting. This spans from not just the caring hands of the dentists and staff but also the surroundings and environment that the patients are in, with décor and amenities to make it feel like a dental practice you have never visited before.

Dentistry is much the same the world over, so in order to differentiate Skye Dental from others in the region, it wanted to be the first of many things. Skye Dental is the first in Singapore to follow and join a global movement and network called the Slow Dentistry Network. This is an international group of dentists and practices that follow set cornerstones in standards. These include impeccable cross-infection control (especially heightened after the COVID epidemic), ensuring adequate anaesthesia for patients (as quite often one hears of dentists carrying out procedures that are painful and the patients felt everything; this should not be the case), informed consent for all procedures, allowing patients to have the autonomy to make decisions and be guided properly in deciding what treatments they wish to have. Finally, Skye Dental uses Rubber Dam technique for most, if not all, dental restorations; this technique ensures long-lasting dental work and the prevention of the need for work to be redone soon. All of these help the practice to establish confidence for the patients, providing full transparency to their dental journey and focusing on quality, not numbers.

Skye Dental is one of the first practices in Singapore to use certain equipment in the provision of a unique experience. This ranges from everyday equipment for simple procedures like scale and polish, to more advanced procedures like teeth whitening and holistic relaxation. Although Skye Dental may not be the first in the world to use certain techniques in its dentistry, it is employing the use of internationally recognized methods that are not very commonly used in Singapore or South East Asia, each dentist focusing on their particular areas of strength.

Skye Dental’s approach to innovation and breakthrough techniques is always evidence-based so experimentation is not done on patients until the techniques or equipment is proven to work. For example, Dr Eide believes strongly in providing early intervention for children when considering orthodontic treatment. Using the most modern methods of Invisalign and evidence-based techniques, she can help reduce the severity of misalignment problems, therefore making future treatment easier or less invasive for children. There is also the educational and promotional aspect of this treatment, whereby patients and laypeople are not fully aware of the advantages of early intervention orthodontics, so Skye Dental is pushing the boundaries in terms of carrying this out and promoting it, for the benefit of the patient.

Dr Andrew is a qualified Digital Smile Design Master and only one of a handful of them in Singapore, employing digital technologies to study a patient’s smile in relation to the face and then plan the changes to make to this in order to optimize the smile; this is done even before touching the patient’s teeth or performing invasive procedures that can be irreversible. Thus, he enables the patient to see the projected outcome before starting the treatment. Together with Dr Eide, they plan facially-driven dentistry and orthodontics, tying in the patient’s concerns, clinical findings and diagnostic investigations to attain an aesthetic outcome for the patient.

All these techniques help improve accuracy and predictability of the results, ensuring a happier patient in the process. We have to set standards in dentistry that can be followed by others, not wait until the rest have pioneered it, so the future is digital and the future is now.

Winning such a prestigious award means a lot to Skye Dental because we set our goals high and try to set the bar high. Winning gives us affirmation that we are amongst good company. At Skye Dental, we have a saying: we do things differently. This award is just the start.

Dr. Andrew Doig, CEO
We plan to continue to grow the clinic internally, in terms of using more and more advanced technologies and systems that can make the patient experience better, as people are traditionally scared of the dentist. There are no immediate plans to open more branches but if we meet like-minded dentists who wish to work or collaborate with us, then we can consider this as an option. In terms of a business, we are always guided by quality and not by finances. Dr Andrew believes that financial gain should be invested back into the practice, in order to continue to make it cutting edge, leading and comfortable for patients – you can see this if you ever visit the practice.
We also like to practice ethically and sustainably. This is why we have adopted a purely digital practice from the get-go, to reduce paper use and waste. We also apply this to other aspects of the practice, such as paper containers for water refreshments for patients and paper products instead of plastic. Dr Andrew also practices “mercury-free dentistry”, meaning he has eradicated the use of mercury-containing dental amalgam materials, as it is toxic to humans. He is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) where they firmly believe in stopping the use of mercury in dentistry, to prevent harm to patients. We will always continue to look at ways to help the environment and reduce waste.
