There is no doubt that the global pandemic has negatively impacted many businesses all around the world, and even here in sunny Singapore. Many business owners chose to close down due to economic reasons. One entrepreneur, however, found an opportunity in the midst of adversity. Jimmy Goh is a serial entrepreneur who has dipped his toes into many fields such as automobile, renovation, and beauty products, just to name a few. His most recent business was a brick-and-mortar furniture shop, which he started in 2018. However, the sudden hit of Covid-19 and the announcement of the Circuit Breaker measure in April 2020 forced him to also go under.

As a furniture business owner, Jimmy knows many distributors, but he makes it a point to build a relationship with the direct factories. One of them is Mysleep, which is a 30-year-old Malaysian mattress manufacturer. Not too long into the pandemic, Mysleep’s owner contacted Jimmy to discuss possible business opportunities in Singapore. With very limited capital, Mysleep owner entrusted Jimmy with one lorry’s worth of stock to try.

Jimmy, who believes in Mysleep products, then rented a small warehouse and shifted his business to online platforms of Qoo10 and Carousell. Most of the marketing is done via social media, such as Facebook and Instagram. He also advertised in SPH newspapers, adding credibility in the eyes of the consumers. Sales really picked up, and Jimmy became the exclusive distributor for Mysleep, supplying to other businesses in Singapore.

As his online business took off, Jimmy noticed that many of his previous competitors were struggling to stay afloat during this challenging time. Jimmy then came up with the idea to engage these furniture business owners to carry Mysleep mattresses, and offer a part of the sales to them. Beyond just enjoying profitable sales for himself, Jimmy thinks that it is important to save the industry while also building a network at the same time. He sees it as a win-win solution that will benefit not only himself, but also other business owners. “The cake is so big, big enough to share,” Jimmy says humbly. As of now, there are 16 partners of Mysleep across the island. On average, they can usually achieve monthly sales of 1,000 mattresses.

Currently Mysleep has three showrooms in Singapore, located in Jurong East, Ubi, and Sembawang. These showrooms function as display studios, where customers can come in and experience the mattresses for themselves, before placing their orders online. The absence of sales activity in the physical showroom helps the on-the-ground staff to focus their effort on providing excellent customer service, unlike the traditional sales-driven approach.

There is no business that thrives on a single person's ability. It takes a team.

Jimmy is a strong believer in harnessing his staff’s potential and setting them up for success. “If a staff member is found to be underperforming, either a senior mentor or myself will sit down with the person and try to rectify the issue,” says Jimmy. “Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it is important to leverage on that. For example, if a person’s temper is not the best but he has good operational skills, we would place him in a position where he does not directly interact with the customers. That way, he can still contribute to the company in his own ways.”
True to that belief, Jimmy also highly encourages young aspiring entrepreneurs to tap on the strength of the people around them. “There is no business that thrives by relying on a single person’s ability,” he says. “There is strength in numbers, so make sure to build a team of people whom you trust and can support your vision. Recognize that everybody excels in different areas, so complement each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses. As a leader, know that the bigger your business gets, the more people’s lives are dependent on you.” He also advises aspiring entrepreneurs to become internet-savvy and keep up with the e-commerce trends.
