SWM Environment Sdn. Bhd. was established in 1995 under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) to oversee the management of solid waste and public cleansing services in the southern region - Johor, Melaka, and Negeri Sembilan. With a dedicated team of 8,000 employees and fleet management of over 1,000 collection vehicles, it serves 27 local authorities (PBT) and caters to approximately 1.5 million residential and commercial premises, impacting the lives of more than 5.1 million people across 28,500 square kilometres. Operational initiatives actively contribute to job creation and economic growth, making significant contributions to local economies and enhancing community well-being.

At the forefront of environmental innovation, SWM Environment’s investments include advanced fleet technologies, Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption to reduce emissions, and a commitment to a circular economy. This involves minimizing waste generation and promoting continual material use. Simultaneously, the company prioritizes renewable energy sources, aiming to power its operations sustainably and reduce its carbon footprint, reflecting its dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.

The commitment towards sustainability drives SWM Environment to embark on an environmental journey; encouraging the public to reconsider their waste separation practices through the KITAReycle program - Rethinking Waste Separation by imparting knowledge on proper waste separation through two primary methods: Separation At Source (SAS) and the 3R approach (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). A remarkable milestone was the development of the KITARecycle app, an innovative solution that focused on digitizing reward-based recycling modules by incentivizing recycling participation and gradually shifting public perception of waste from being seen as a problem to being viewed as a valuable resource. Consequently, it contributed to a changed mindset towards recycling practices and bolstered the concept of the circular economy.

Expanding on SWM Kasih initiatives, SWM Environment intensified community outreach programs focusing on education, training, and sustainable waste practices. Simultaneously, it has introduced initiatives creating employment opportunities in vulnerable communities for local socio-economic development. In terms of governance excellence, it has enhanced ESG reporting for detailed insights into its performance, ensuring ethical practices throughout its supply chain. These efforts underscore SWM Environment’s commitment to holistic community engagement, job creation, and governance excellence, fostering a sustainable and responsible operational framework.

The SME100 Award is integral to enhancing SWM Environment brand visibility, equity, and attracting strategic partnerships. Beyond a mere accolade, the SME100 Award represents a strategic investment in opening doors to new opportunities and establishing a legacy of excellence in waste management.
